Experience history at the House of Migrants

The House of Migrants is located in the newly renovated barn that is a part of the old farm of Ol-Anders. Here history comes to life. This museum for the senses brings to life the unique emigration history of this area from the middle of the 19th Century when Erik Jansson and a group of followers set off for North America.

The main character in the museum is Brita Olsdotter, who emigrated to Bishop Hill in 1846 along with three sisters. Visitors follow Erik Jansson's life and adventures in this area, but also the lives of Brita Olsdotter and other emigrants on their journey from their homes in Sweden to America. You can experience the environment onboard a ship, listen to the story of an eventful voyage and finally see life as it was in Bishop Hill.

Apart from the emigrant and genealogical research, we continue to build databases of emigrants and immigrants. We have completed the registration of basic parish information for the province of Gävleborg, but we continue updating them. Currently, we are entering facts for the province of Västernorrland. The registration of basic information for the parishes for the years 1840-1895 is finished and we have now started to work on the years 1896-1930
